Job Description
• Key Responsibilities
o Manage and organize resources, facilities and services provided by the Library and Resource Center, in conjunction with the school management team, to allow flexible access and support for curricular activities, study support and independent use.
o Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of the service provided by the Library and Resource Center and implement changes, where necessary, preparing a Library and Resource Center improvement plan, in order to meet new priorities in conjunction with school leadership and other staff.
o Select, acquire, purchase, advise on the promotion of learning resources in all formats and recreational reading material which support the curriculum, learning and teaching and literacy, in consultation with school management and other teaching staff, ensuring equality of access for all pupils and staff.
o Index, catalog and classify learning resources in the Library and Resource Center and develop and maintain accurate and reliable catalog and lending systems.
o Take responsibility for the Library and Information Center budget, allocating resources as identified in the Library and Information Center development plan and present an annual report to the Academic Manager.
o Collaborate with teaching staff in the planning, development, delivery and evaluation of relevant information and study skills programmes in the Library and Resource Center.
o Contribute to the development and promotion of the use of relevant ICT applications to support learning and teaching in the Library and Resource Centre, Follett Destiny, on-line database, email and Internet, and keep abreast of ICT initiatives which have an impact on the delivery of a school library and resource service.
o Promote the use of Library and Resource Center to the school community and foster an atmosphere which is conducive to positive learning experiences, i.e. investigation and research, for users of the service. This will include ensuring a high standard of display and promotional materials is available.
o Disseminate information on resources and services through the production of curriculum-based bibliographies of Library and Resource Center resources, and where appropriate, organize book events, author visits, book fairs and exhibitions in consultation with school management.
o Contribute to relevant policy development in the school through memberships of appropriate groups, attendance, where appropriate, at school management team meetings, and through liaison with other teachers, e.g. ICT strategy, study support and curricular resource support.
o Be aware of current developments in education and maintain staff resources.
o Develop and maintain links with external agencies and sources to maximize the use of appropriate materials and information for the Library and Resource Center, including public libraries, museums, local colleges, community learning services and other local authorities.
o Develop, maintain and facilitate access to a careers library.
o Plan and deliver lessons on proper research methods and referencing techniques, including proper citation.
o Develop and promote a policy on academic honesty.
o Be available to cover/sub lessons for teacher absence.
o Encourage pupil involvement in the running of the Library and Resource Center.
Job Requirement
• Essential:
o At least a BA/BEd degree + 2 years or experience at an educational institution.
o Working with children and adults
o The desire and ability to teach library lessons
o Good ICT and organizational skills
o Ability to solve problems
o A team player
o Capable of working to specific targets and programmes, but also demonstrating creative thinking and independent working
o A pleasant, fair and approachable manner
o Enthusiasm for libraries
o Reliability e.g. timekeeping
o Flexibility e.g. being available during lunch breaks/ taking an early or late lunch
o Desirable:
o Being a qualified teacher
o Working in a library or information management environment
o Experience of working in a school library
